About the person
Hadis Najafi stands as one of the young women whose life and final choices came to symbolize the courage of a generation. Born in Karaj on 5 January 2000, Hadis grew up in a family rooted in the cultural heritage of Mianeh in East Azerbaijan. As the fourth child—surrounded by three older sisters and a younger brother—she was shaped by a home filled with the warmth and strength characteristic of Iranian Azerbaijani families.

Creative at heart, Hadis earned a diploma in fashion design, and like many young Iranians striving toward independence, she worked as a cashier in a restaurant in Mehrshahr, Karaj. Her life, though simple and unassuming, reflected the determination and quiet ambition of Iran’s youth.

When the Mahsa Amini protests erupted in September 2022—protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini while in police custody—Hadis, who had never before been involved in activism, chose to join the demonstrators in Karaj. The movement had quickly grown into one of the most significant expressions of public demand for dignity and women’s rights in modern Iranian history.

On the night of 21 September 2022, Hadis recorded a message to a friend, expressing a sentiment that would later define her legacy:
“I like to think that when I think about this a few years later, I’ll be pleased I joined the protest.”

Those words, simple yet resolute, captured the spirit of countless young Iranians who stepped into the streets with hope, conviction, and a belief in a better future. Only about thirty minutes after leaving her home that night, Hadis was killed during the unrest.

For historians, Hadis Najafi’s story is emblematic of a moment in which ordinary young people became unwilling witnesses—and participants—in historic transformation. And for the Iranian people, her memory endures as a symbol of bravery: a young woman who, with no prior history of activism, still found the courage to stand with her compatriots in a defining hour.
