In the annals of Iran’s long struggle for dignity and liberty, Ghazaleh Chalabi is remembered as one of the spirited daughters of the nation whose final act became intertwined with a historic moment. Born on August 3, 1989, in the northern city of Amol, she was a woman whose strength came not only from conviction but from the mountains she loved. A mountaineer and athlete, she often said that nature made her feel powerful—its vastness reflecting her own inner resolve. Her energy, optimism, and zest for life left an imprint on everyone who knew her.

Educated in banking management, Ghazaleh worked as an accountant in a private company alongside her aunt. She was active on social media, using her voice to engage with the world around her. When the news of Jina Mahsa Amini’s death broke in mid-September 2022, Ghazaleh was deeply shaken. She asked again and again, “What did they do to that poor girl?” And when Mahsa’s passing was formally announced on September 16, Ghazaleh wept, crying, “But she was wearing her hijab!”

From that day forward, she found no rest. Like many Iranians whose hearts were stirred by grief and outrage, she felt compelled to rise, to speak, to stand.

As the first calls for protest echoed across the country, Ghazaleh stepped into the streets of Amol, determined to show her defiance and her longing for freedom. In her final phone call on September 21, 2022, she tried to ease her family’s fears with a gentle reassurance: “Don’t worry.”

According to widely shared footage and reports, that same day—five days into the nationwide uprising—Ghazaleh was filming scenes from the protests when she was struck by gunfire. Her phone, still recording, captured the instant she fell. The video circulated widely online, showing a member of the security forces firing toward protesters moments before she collapsed. People rushed to her aid, but it was too late.

For historians, the story of Ghazaleh Chalabi represents more than the loss of a single life; it is a testament to the courage of ordinary Iranians who chose to stand on the front lines of change. For the Iranian people, she remains a symbol of resilience—a young woman who offered her voice and, ultimately, her life in pursuit of freedom.

در دفترهای تاریخ مبارزات آزادی‌خواهانهٔ مردم ایران، غزاله چلابی به‌عنوان یکی از دختران پرشور این سرزمین شناخته می‌شود؛ زنی که زندگی و مرگش با یکی از حساس‌ترین لحظات تاریخ معاصر ایران گره خورد. او در ۱۲ مرداد ۱۳۶۸ در آمل، شهر سرسبز شمال کشور، به دنیا آمد. غزاله کوهنورد و ورزشکار بود و همواره می‌گفت که طبیعت به او قدرت می‌دهد؛ گویی عظمت کوه‌ها بازتابی از ارادهٔ درونی خودش بود. شور و اشتیاقش به زندگی، اطرافیانش را نیز به وجد می‌آورد.

غزاله در رشتهٔ مدیریت بانکداری تحصیل کرده بود و در یک شرکت خصوصی در کنار خاله‌اش به‌عنوان حسابدار کار می‌کرد. او در شبکه‌های اجتماعی فعال بود و نسبت به رخدادهای پیرامون خود حساسیت نشان می‌داد. با انتشار خبر جان‌باختن ژینا مهسا امینی در میانهٔ شهریور ۱۴۰۱، غزاله دردمند شد و مدام می‌پرسید: «با اون دختر بیچاره چه کار کردند؟»
و هنگامی که مرگ مهسا در ۲۵ شهریور تأیید شد، با اشک گفت: «ولی که حجاب داشت!»

از همان روز تا دم مرگش، آرام و قرار از او گرفته شد. همچون بسیاری از مردمی که دل‌شان از ستم و اندوه به تپش افتاده بود، احساس کرد باید برخیزد و صدای آزادی باشد.

با انتشار نخستین فراخوان‌ها، غزاله به جمع معترضان آمل پیوست. در آخرین تماس تلفنی خود در ۳۰ شهریور ۱۴۰۱، برای آرام کردن خانواده‌اش تنها گفت: «نگران نباشید.»

بنابر ویدئوها و گزارش‌های منتشرشده، همان روز—در پنجمین روز خیزش سراسری—غزاله هنگام فیلم‌برداری از صحنه‌های اعتراضات هدف گلوله قرار گرفت. گوشی‌اش که هنوز در دستش بود، لحظهٔ اصابت را ضبط کرد؛ تصویری که در شبکه‌های اجتماعی گسترده شد و در آن، شلیک یکی از نیروهای امنیتی به سوی معترضان و سپس فرو افتادن غزاله دیده می‌شود. مردم با شتاب به کمک او رفتند، اما دیگر دیر شده بود.

از نگاه تاریخ‌نگاران، سرگذشت غزاله چلابی فراتر از یک زندگی شخصی است؛ او یادآور شجاعتی است که در دل مردم عادی این کشور شعله‌ور شد. و برای ملت ایران، نام او نمادی از پایداری است—دختری که برای آزادی وطنش، صدای خود و سرانجام جان خود را تقدیم کرد.
